I love the world of art, design, writing, and communications. My fascination with cartooning and advertising began in the pages of the comic books I read as a kid (big fan of all-things Marvel). I was fascinated by the ads for Sea Monkeys and X-ray glasses. Needless to say, I spent more time in class doodling than I did on school work.
Despite a general aversion to doing homework (especially math), I made it to college attending Westminster College (Salt Lake City) and the University of Nebraska (Omaha) before returning to the Rocky Mountains and graduating from the University of Utah with a degree in advertising and communications. While in college, I worked as an editorial cartoonist and art director for the campus newspapers. Beginning in high school and continuing at all three colleges, I created a weekly cartoon strip (which I hope to add to this site someday).
I was lucky enough to direct my writing and design skills along with a naturally curious mind into a career in advertising. I have written and produced ads ranging from healthcare and high tech to sofas and sedans. I also had a few restaurant clients over the years which gave me the opportunity to create kids menus using my long-lost cartooning skills.
I discovered InkTober in 2017 and jumped in with both feet. Most of the cartoons in Funny Trout and Other Silly Tales are a result of the daily prompts that are part of the month-long challenge each October. In 2017, my drawings were all done with pen and ink. This year, I drew the cartoons on an Apple iPad using a program called Procreate. It took a few drawings to get the hang of the app, but I have thoroughly enjoyed creating in this fairly new medium.
As one of those people who can never get enough sunshine, I enjoy being outdoors, especially fly fishing, hiking, and road cycling.
